Covid-19 / Coronavirus

UPDATE, 24 MAY 2021: Under the Government’s ‘road map’ for easing Covid-19 restrictions, cinemas are among several venues that have been allowed to reopen since 17 May.

We are planning how and when HIC will restart screenings, hopefully in the near future. As we do not own or operate our own cinema we need to work closely with our venue partners, and also ensure that we only return to screening when it is sustainable for us to do so.

We are currently speaking to both our main venues, Vue Cinema Princes Quay and Hull Truck Theatre, to find out when they plan to start working with third party exhibitors like HIC; what systems they have in place to keep our audiences and volunteers safe; and what changes they might need us to make to the way we operate in order to comply with these systems.

As long as social distancing is required in cinema screens it will have an impact on our finances, as usually our film seasons break even thanks to a small number of very popular screenings generating enough revenue to cover the costs of those films that might not attract such large audiences but which are central to our mission of bringing you the best independent and world cinema that you can’t see anywhere else. If capacities remain limited, that is something that we will need to bear in mind when deciding when to restart.

We will continue to update this page and communicate via our social media channels and mailing list as and when we have more information regarding a restart date. Thank you to all our audience members for your patience, support and understanding during this time.

UPDATE, 30 JUNE: The HIC Board of Trustees has decided that we will not be screening any films during what would have been our July to September season, even though cinemas have been given permission to reopen from Saturday 4 July onwards.

We know that one of our venues, Hull Truck Theatre, will not be reopening until much later in the year. Our other main venue, Vue Cinema in Princes Quay, is planning to reopen soon, but that could easily change due to circumstances beyond our control. Even if they do reopen as planned we do not yet know if they would be able to accommodate our screenings.

While we do have some financial costs that still need covering, we have no venue of our own to pay for or maintain, and no paid staff, and good levels of cash reserves. Therefore, we are not under financial pressure to restart screening films until we are certain that we can do so in a way that keeps our audiences, our volunteers, and the staff at our venues, safe.

We have already extended the expiry dates of all active HIC memberships when our March to June season was cancelled, and we will do so again to ensure no-one is paying for a membership they cannot use.

We will add updates to this page as needed. We will also communicate changes via our social media pages and by email. You can follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, or sign up for email news at the bottom of this page.

UPDATE, 6:15pm, 20 MARCH: It’s with a heavy heart we are cancelling our April-June 2020 season of film as well as July’s Hull Film Festival 2020, due to the Government advice for tackling Covid-19 / Coronavirus, and discussions with our screening venues.

But fear not! We have a great film freebie to keep you entertained at home in our absence – full details here.

UPDATE, 11:15am, 17 MARCH: Following yesterday’s announcement by the Government of updated advice for tackling Covid-19 / Coronavirus, and discussions with our venues and ticketing partners, we regret to announce that our screenings of LITTLE JOE this evening and PARASITE next week are now cancelled. We will arrange for all advance ticket holders to be contacted directly and receive refunds.

Our new season of films from April to June will also be cancelled.

We’d like to say thank you to our members and customers for your support, patience and understanding while we have been managing this situation. As a volunteer-run organisation we’re in a better position financially to get through this shutdown than many other organisations in the cinema and other entertainment and cultural industries. As soon as circumstances allow we’ll be back to bringing you fantastic films; we can’t wait to see you all again.
