Class and chance collide in Sean McAllister’s new film, as young performers in Hull are guided through their home’s transformational year as UK City of Culture 2017.
Following the success of his last film, 2015’s Sheffield Doc/Fest Grand Jury Winner A SYRIAN LOVE STORY, Sean McAllister returns to Hull, his hometown, for the UK City of Culture year.
Living with his 90-year-old parents and reflecting on the changes happening in a city hit by cuts in public spending and divided by Brexit, Sean is drawn to the fringes of town where he encounters Steve – a struggling warehouse worker by day and hip-hop performer (Redeye Feenix) by night – who harbours his own creative dream. Featuring footage from City of Culture events including the spectacular Made in Hull light show at the start of the year, which was curated by McAllister, A NORTHERN SOUL examines our city’s year in the limelight from a fresh and vital perspective.
The film will feature a post-film Q&A with Sean McAllister and Steve Arnott, plus a performance from Beats Bus Kids at selected screenings

A NORTHERN SOUL is expected to be rated 12A by Hull City Council.
