Hull Independent Cinema and Yorkshire Silent Film Festival present: BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN with live score
Sergei M. Eisenstein | 1925 | Soviet Union | Cert PG | 77 mins | Silent

Eisenstein’s epic dramatisation of the 1905 mutiny aboard the battleship Potemkin is regularly cited as one of the greatest films of all time. A tense, action-filled drama, this taught, 75-minute film is assembled from more than 13,000 individual shots, exemplifying Eisenstein’s view that editing (or montage) is the fundamental essential of film. The famous Odessa Steps sequence has been hugely influential with directors such as Terry Gilliam, Woody Allen and Brian De Palma all paying homage to it in their films. Live improvised score by Jonny Best on piano.
When they are fed rancid meat, the sailors on the Potemkin revolt against their harsh conditions. Led by Vakulinchuk, the sailors kill the officers of the ship to gain their freedom. Vakulinchuk is also killed, and the people of Odessa honour him as a symbol of revolution. Tsarist soldiers arrive and massacre the civilians to quell the uprising. A squadron of ships is sent to overthrow the Potemkin, but the ships side with the revolt and refuse to attack. Declared the greatest film of all time at the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair and one of only two films to have appeared on all of Sight & Sound’s critics’ polls (1952–2002), Battleship Potemkin has also been widely censored, as much out of fear of the perceived influence of its ideas as for any contentious material on screen.
HIC are delighted once again to be partner with Yorkshire Silent Film Festival. This screening of BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN will be accompanied by a live score by Jonathan Best on piano.
BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN is rated PG. Visit the BBFC website for full details (may include plot spoilers).
