A selection of films from the shortlist for the Best Short Film Prize at the 2019 Austrian Film Academy Film Awards. The programme includes all three nominees, BESTER MANN, VIRGIN WOODS and the eventual prizewinner, the slightly surreal sideways look at an Austrian health spa, EXCUSE ME I’M LOOKING FOR THE PING-PONG ROOM AND MY GIRLFRIEND, as well as a selection from the other shortlisted titles, covering everything from drama to comedy, music video to documentary.

AUSTRIAN SHORT FILM FESTIVAL | Various Directors | 2018 | Austrian | Unrated – 18+ Only | 210 mins with breaks | German with English subtitles

The Films

  • ENTSCHULDIGUNG, ICH SUCHE DEN TISCHTENNISRAUM UND MEINE FREUNDIN

(EXCUSE ME, I’M LOOKING FOR THE PING-PONG ROOM AND MY GIRLFRIEND) | Bernard Wenger | Austria / Germany / Sweden | 23 mins

The winner of the Short Film Prize, Entschuldigung… follows Aron as he wanders the bizarre world of the corridors and rooms of an Austrian mountain health resort, looking for his girlfriend following an argument.

  • BESTER MANN

(BEST MAN) | Florian Frosch | Austria / Germany | 44 mins

One of the three final nominees for the award, BESTER MANN sees shy teenager Kevin taken in by the older Bennie, in a disturbing tale about the vulnerability of youth, the power of intimacy and the murky motives that often lie behind supposedly innocent actions.

  • VIRGIN WOODS / ZALESIE

Julia Zborowska | Austria / Poland | 30mins

Shot on 16mm film, the ethereal VIRGIN WOODS is a dreamlike story about one young woman’s innocent ideas about love and death, as 11-year-old Joanna contemplates life among the fairytale forests and rivers of Poland. This was the third of the three final prize nominees.

  • ARS MORIENDI ODER DIE KUNST DES LEBENS

(ARS MORIENDI OR THE ART OF LIVING) | Kristina Schranz | Austria / Germany | 29 mins

93 year old Rosemarie Arbenach has spent her life freeing herself – from her bombed house in WWII and from the expectations of post-war life as a pastor’s wife. Now she has her life in her own hands and is writing her doctorate on the subject of death, “because I’m old enough for it”. A moving portrait both of a woman and of a century now past.

  • DER SIEG DER BARHMHERZIGKEIT

(THE VICTORY OF MERCY) | Albert Meisl | Austria | 24 mins

Musicologist Szabo collects archive material from the history of Austrian pop music. When a rare stage costume from a 1960s band ends up in a charity clothing collection, he will do anything to get hold of it, even roping in his reluctant colleague Fitzhum, in this off-the-wall comedy.

  • KIDS N CATS – FRIZZLE FRIZZ

Patryk Senwicki | Austria | 4 mins | Music video

Innovative music video for Kids n Cats’ 2017 track Frizzle Frizz.

  • FRAGMENTED

Anne Zweiner | Austria | 5 mins

When a woman is involved in an accident and rushed to hospital for an emergency operation, her perceptions of the events around her merge with memories and surreal hallucinations.

The screening will be run in four segments of between one and three films each, with a short break between. Your ticket allows you to come and go during the breaks, so you can enjoy the whole afternoon with us or pop in for just a few films – the choice is yours.

This screening is organised in partnership with Theresa Guczogi of the University of Hull, and is one of nine screenings taking place in partnership with universities across the UK and Ireland. The screening is sponsored by the Austrian Cultural Forum London.
