A precocious six-year-old and her rag-tag group of close friends’ summer break is filled with childhood wonder, possibility and a sense of adventure, while their parents and the adults around them struggle with hard times.
Warm, winning, and gloriously alive, Sean Baker’s THE FLORIDA PROJECT is a deeply moving and unforgettably poignant look at childhood.
Set on a stretch of highway just outside the imagined utopia of Disney World, THE FLORIDA PROJECT follows six-year-old Moonee and her rebellious mother Halley over the course of a single summer. The two live week to week at “The Magic Castle,” a budget motel managed by Bobby, whose stern exterior hides a deep reservoir of kindness and compassion. Despite her harsh surroundings, the precocious and ebullient Moonee has no trouble making each day a celebration of life, her endless afternoons overflowing with mischief and grand adventure as she and her ragtag playmates—including Jancey, a new arrival to the area who quickly becomes Moonee’s best friend—fearlessly explore the utterly unique world into which they’ve been thrown. Unbeknownst to Moonee, however, her delicate fantasy is supported by the toil and sacrifice of Halley, who is forced to explore increasingly dangerous possibilities in order to provide for her daughter.
Starring Willem Dafoe, Brooklynn Prince, Valeria Cotto, Bria Vinaite
Nominated Best Feature, Best Director 2018 Independent Spirit Awards
Nominated Best International Independent Feature, British Indepenent Film Awards
“You feel as if you’ve slipped inside of Moonee’s enchanted world, while at the same time seeing the harsh reality of Halley’s. That contrast is devastating, right up to a final sequence that’s sure to break your heart in two.” – Moira McDonald, Seattle Times
“THE FLORIDA PROJECT further cements Baker’s status as one of the most innovative American directors working today, but he’s also an essential advocate for the stories this country often doesn’t get to see.” – Eric Kohn, IndieWire
THE FLORIDA PROJECT is rated 15. Visit the BBFC website for full details (may include plot spoilers).
