Batman’s arch enemy, The Joker, was inspired by this darkly romantic silent movie masterpiece. Based on the novel by Victor Hugo (Les Miserables, Hunchback of Notre Dame), THE MAN WHO LAUGHS tells the story of Gwynplaine, a nobleman’s son who is kidnapped and orphaned by a wicked king, who carves a permanent, monstrous smile upon his face. Finding shelter in a travelling carnival, Gwynplaine falls in love with a blind girl – the one person who cannot be repulsed by his appearance.
Part swashbuckler, part expressionist horror, THE MAN WHO LAUGHS is a sweeping, spectacular adventure and one of silent Hollywood’s rarely screened classics.
With live improvised piano score from Jonny Best.
PLEASE NOTE: This film will play without any adverts or trailers, preceded by a short introduction from Yorkshire Silents.
“One of the final treasures of German silent Expressionism.” Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
“It’s Leni’s pictorial genius – aided here by what must have been an enormous budget – that marks the film as one of the most exhilarating of late silent cinema.” Bob Baker, Time Out
THE MAN WHO LAUGHS is rated PG.
Hull Truck Theatre is open all day, so why not come along early to grab a drink and a snack? Doors to the screening room usually open around ten minutes before the performance starts.
The programme run time includes an allowance for introductions. While we will endeavour to accommodate latecomers, this may not always be possible. Please note that we reserve the right to refuse entry, without a refund, to anyone arriving after the advertised start time.
